Marble Falls boys soccer earns win in district opener against Lago Vista

The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team beat Lago Vista 8-0 Jan. 24 to begin District 25-4A play and followed that with a 2-1 loss to Austin KIPP in a non-district match Jan. 27.
Mustangs head coach Rick Hoover said the district contest was closer than the score indicates.
“The big thing about that game,” he said, “with two minutes left in the first half, it was 1-0. They played us tough.”
The Vikings, who are in their first year of having high school soccer, have talented players. The difference in this contest, Hoover said, is the Mustangs’ years of playing.
“We have more depth,” he said. “Their starting 11 can compete. In soccer, your starting 11 can’t stay out there. You have to rotate because it’s a non-stop game.”
No program understands that better than Marble Falls, which experienced that throughout the years as a Class 5A member facing the Leander and Georgetown schools.
“We have a little of that advantage competing against Class 4As,” Hoover said. ” I never want to run up the score. We’ve had more than our fair share of being on the other side of that.”
Because KIPP was a non-district contest, Hoover gave the varsity starters the night off, opting to send them on a scouting trip to Lago Vista. The Vikings were hosting Austin Achieve, which will visit Mustang Stadium Friday, Feb. 3. Achieve beat Lago Vista 3-2
Hoover combined the varsity reserves with the junior varsity to face KIPP.
“I called their coach and told him what I was going to do,” he said, adding the coach still wanted to play.
Marble Falls cancelled the contest against Austin Harmony scheduled forTuesday, Jan. 31, and returns to action Friday, Feb. 3, at Austin Achieve. The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.
